The Backbone of Hospice: A CNA’s Journey

Yhetta Fitzgerald, CNA

In honor of CNA Week, an annual observance dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of certified nursing assistants (CNAs) in healthcare, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Yhetta, a dedicated CNA who has spent 18 years in hospice care. Her story is one of compassion and commitment, highlighting the critical role CNAs play in hospice teams. Below are the 3 ways CNAs serve our community, told through the profound journey and the invaluable insights Yhetta has gained over the years.

Collaboration: The Key to Quality Care

As a CNA, we are often the first to notice subtle changes in a patient’s condition that are crucial for their care plan. We communicate these observations to the rest of the team, ensuring comprehensive care that a family might not be aware of or mention. During one patient’s journey, their family was uncomfortable being alone during their loved ones end of life. Our team ensured that they were supported during their final moments by taking shifts to provide continuous support, making a significant difference in the family’s experience during such a vulnerable time.

CNAs: The Backbone of Hospice Care

We make sure our patients’ voices are heard by both their families and the hospice team. For instance, we advocate for pain medication before care procedures to ensure the patient is comfortable and not in pain.

CNAs are the backbone of hospice care. We are the ones who spend the most time with patients, providing essential care and comfort. Our observations can make a difference in a patient’s care plan. For example, a CNA notices a client who at one time could stand for a shower starting to rely on the handrail for support. We will immediately discuss the need for a shower chair with the client for safety, document their observations, and inform the nurse, leading to a critical adjustment in the care plan. Seemingly small observances and adjustments like these can make all the difference when it comes to a patient’s safety.

Lessons in Compassion and Empathy

Hospice care is about supporting someone at the end of their life journey. It is a privilege to be chosen for this role, providing comfort and dignity to the patient and their family during such a vulnerable time. We cherish listening to patients’ life stories – how they met their spouse, the jobs they held, and the places they traveled. These moments of connection are incredibly rewarding.

Hospice care teaches us profound compassion and empathy for people, regardless of their background or circumstances. It’s a lesson in humanity that transcends all walks of life.

Yhetta’s experiences highlight the indispensable role that CNAs play in hospice care. Their dedication, keen observations, and advocacy ensure that patients receive comprehensive and compassionate care during one of life’s most challenging times. CNAs like Yhetta not only support the medical team but also bring comfort and dignity to patients and their families, embodying the true spirit of hospice care.
